Meet John Doyle

Introducing Team MacRae Candidate John Doyle

"I wanted to run for Council because you cannot make a change if you are not involved or part of the conversation. I’ve joined Team MacRae because I’ve worked alongside Peta and know that she is passionate about our community and is a good person. When people ask why they should vote for Peta, I tell them she’s got the knowledge and experience to lead."

John’s business and tireless community volunteering both see him working alongside young people in our community every day, recognizing the challenges and the opportunities for them in our community. We’re thrilled to have his passion, fresh ideas, and perspective on Team MacRae as we work to build a better future for Mount Isa by growing the local economy and making our community affordable, safe, and liveable for local families.

John Doyle is a family man and business owner – along with his own three children and 15 nieces and nephews he considers the kids and clients of his business as part of his extended family.

He’s passionate about sport and the opportunities it can bring for communities, especially our youth. He’s spent his life putting this into action, through his career, his business, volunteer work, and as a role model in our community.

As an elite athlete, John played in the NRL for the Cowboys, Roosters and for Queensland in the 2001 and 2002 State of Origin. Now he tries to bring the knowledge and experience from this time of his life to the young people he works with. You can find him training kids every afternoon in several sports, and on weekends he’ll be down at the Rugby League or Captain Cook Oval. He also works with schools and other organisations, including the local police if any of the kids in his programmes find themselves in difficulty.

John’s passion for helping youth came from his father, who was a Police Liaison Officer in Rockhampton. Together they ran alternate pathway programs for at risk youth for Education Queensland. He’s a passionate anti-drug and alcohol advocate, believes in tough love and holding kids accountable for their actions, and that those who work with children have a responsibility to set a good example.

There’s no better role models for the community than John and his wife Juanita, who is from a large Mount Isa family. Along with her sisters, Juanita runs a successful art business, Cungelella Art. They also give back to the community through art classes and community work when they can. They even helped Council with the fantastic 100-year logo!

John’s vision is for a sporting excellence centre where athletes from many sports can train, but also a place where people can become physically and mentally strong through good lifestyle choices, exercise, and nutrition. He sees first-hand the pathways that sport can offer – not just for those who are athletes but through coaching, nutrition, physiotherapy and more. His focus is to help kids stay fit, healthy, and out of trouble so that they can find their passion and purpose in life.

John believes short term programs that are funded are band-aid measures that do not show long term results. The true work comes from forming long term relationships with the kids, so they know where to go if they start heading down the wrong track or find themselves in trouble. They know there are consequences, such as missing training and the like, but they know that the fact that he sets rules and boundaries to live by shows he cares.

We're proud to have John join Team MacRae, bringing his firsthand experience of what is needed to deliver programmes that will achieve better outcomes for our youth and how to support local families and grow our community.
